Q: How can I close applications from Mission Control?  I hide the dock and like it out of the way while I'm working.

I'd like to manage (close) the application windows for running applications, from Mission Control. Gnome Shell has something similar to Mission Control but each window has an "X" at the top left that allows you to close it from the overview.. This is the most natural way for me to "clean up" my open windows.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Closing all open windows does not always quit the application. Only apps that have one window like System Preferences, Keychain Access and Disk Utility can be quit by closing a window. More info

You can hold down the Option key when clicking on a red close button in an app and it will close all open windows that are open for the app. This does not quit the app.

Command+Option+Q lets you quit an application and close all of its windows so that when you reopen the app there won't be open windows.

If you want to quit all open applications, see this post on using Automator to Quit Everything.

To quite any open app from anywhere is most effectively done from the heads-up display: command tab opens the heads-up display.

Once the heads-up display is visible continue to hold the command key,

You move through the apps by taping the Tab key repeatable to move left to right, (or the tilde key to move right to left.)

Once you land on your app,  Q will then quit the app (as in command Q.)

I can't mark it as solving my question because I was specifically looking to close the app from mission control, but this was VERY helpful as you've given me an alternative that will address the use case.  It might end up being easier in the end than the mission control approach, as I typically favor keyboard shortcuts over their mouse/trackpad alternatives.

    Thank You

There is no way to do it from Mission Control.
