See: About Apple Watch water resistance - Apple Support
Can I go swimming or take a shower with my Apple Watch?
Submerging your Apple Watch isn't recommended. Water resistance isn't a permanent condition, and your Apple Watch can't be rechecked or resealed for water resistance. The following may affect the water resistance of your Apple Watch and should be avoided:
- Dropping your Apple Watch or subjecting it to other impacts.
- Submerging your Apple Watch in water for long periods of time.
- Swimming or bathing with your Apple Watch.
- Exposing your Apple Watch to pressurized water or high velocity water, for example, showering, water skiing, wake boarding, surfing, jet skiing, and so on.
- Wearing your Apple Watch in a sauna or steam room.
Use the "Other" workout to record the time you are exercising . It can be run while you are not wearing your watch

Apple WatchHi
You may find the following third-party app of interest for receiving Move credit (but not Exercise credit) on Apple Watch for swimming sessions, without wearing your watch whilst swimming (which Apple advises against). Workouts are also shared to the Health app on iPhone:
- Swimtivity
- "With Swimtivity, you can get credit for your swim workouts in the Apple Watch Activity Move ring--without risking your watch in the pool."
- "After your activity, use the Swimtivity Apple Watch app to enter your workout information."
- "Workouts are saved to the Health app and the entered calories are counted towards your Move goal for the day."
- "Note: Due to limitations with the Health API, you will NOT get credit for the Exercise ring."

Apple WatchYou may also find this third-party product (for example) of interest:
- CATALYST® CASE FOR APPLE WATCH
- " Introducing the first of its kind, a fully functional, award winning, waterproof case for Apple watch. "
- " Our water rating is suitable for .. surface swimming "
- " All features fully functional including heart rate sensors " [see my comment below]
- " IP-68 Waterproof: Every unit tested 5ATM (165ft / 50m)* " [see their explanation]
Note: this is not a recommendation - be sure to perform your own due diligence.
Also keep in mind that:
- The screen would not function normally (in terms of touch sensitivity) under water.
- Should the case fail, your watch may become damaged and ineligible for warranty service.

Apple WatchHi,
Be aware, the one year limited warranty does not cover water damage while swimming.
That requires Apple Care+
You can check your coverage here > https://checkcoverage.apple.com
The Apple Watch serial number is available on your iPhone. Tap the Watch icon then tap General then swipe down to Serial Number.

AppleCare+ covers up to two instances of accidental damage (each subject to a service fee / excess).
It does not cover damage incurred by routinely swimming with the watch. This would amount to wilful misuse (léonie's reply refers to Apple's published guidelines).

Apple WatchOkay so I guess I should have added a little more comments for this question.
1. I know it's water resistant and not waterproof I'm not planning on taking it into the pool with me.
2. As for AppleCare I understand how the insurance works, but I'm not planning on taking it into the pool with me.
I'm just trying to figure out if apple or a 3rd party app has given us the ability to add workouts to the watch so one would be able to get credit for the workout and calories burned. Mainly because I do about 45-60 minutes of lap swimming daily and I'm unable to log that into my watch. I log it in the health app but of course it doesn't reflect on the activity app. So I'm just trying to find a way to log my swim and other workouts to my activity app or be able to log it on the watch.

Apple WatchSwimtivity - the third-party app suggested in my earlier reply - credits calories from swimming workouts towards your daily Move goal on your watch. You can add either the value estimated by the app or an edited total.
As noted above, the app presently does not / cannot also add Exercise credit.
Swimming workouts are also saved to the Health app on your iPhone.

Apple WatchIt is not presently possible, via the built-in apps, to manually add credit towards the daily Activity app goal rings.
If you would like to suggest that Apple considers adding that capability as a new feature, you can do so here:
