Are these temperatures normal?

Hello all,

perhaps i am just a bit over-concerned. but better be safe than sorry.

my macbook idles at around 43 degrees celuis, sometimes even 39 when in a cold room.

i tried to stress test is using geekbench - results (in terms of performance) were ok.

then i ran "yes" command on both cores (both cores show at almost 100%), temps became stable at around 97 degrees Celsius after a couple of minutes.

i got the above temps from "intel power gadget", from "istats" temps were different for some reason, only 77 degrees Celsius.

so:

1. so considering both cores are at 100%, are the temps normal?

2. does it make sense the fan speed is only 2800 rpm?

(macbook pro retina 13-inch i5 2.7ghz early 2015)

p.s.

i have no other issues, performance on this macbook is excellent imo, quite pleased with this device.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), null

Temperatures in the mid 90°c range are certainly normal when running CPU/GPU intensive applications. However fan speeds should be at maximum speed under those conditions. Perhaps you should reset the SMC:

Be aware that there are internal temperature shut down provisions that will prevent the MBP from committing Hari Kari due to heat.

Ciao.

thanks for the reply,

fans speed seemed to reach 3200rpm with temp of 97-98.

i ran diagnostics - all ok

apple store ran diagnostics - all ok (+reset the smc)

temp readings or ok, the fans do speed up (not all the way, but they do speed up) so it seems the macbook is willingly not turning fans on full speed.

could it be that 98C is just sustainable on the new macbooks and it wont turn on fans full speed but will feel comfortable staying at around 3200rpm?

That is a question that you should pose to an Apple store genius bar technician. Unless fan speed ranges have been altered on retina MBPs, the fan should be at 6200 rpm when the temperatures are in the 90°c range. That has always been my experience. Either your test procedures are not creating true 'real life conditions' or there is something wrong. I suggest that you have this looked at.

Ciao.
