Q: iPhoto incompatibility with El Capitan V10.11.5

iPhoto on my dock is not able to be opened. When trying, the following message appears "In order to open “iPhoto”, you need to update to the latest version. The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X El Capitan. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store."  When going to the App Store, the following message appears: "Item Not Available.  The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store."

What is this all about?  I no longer have use the the iPhoto application installed on my computer?  iPhoto has been replaced by something else - perhaps "Photos"?  I haven't a clue what this is about.  Any thoughts?

The upgrade to El Capitan removed the iPhoto icon from the Dock, and replaced it by the Photos for Mac icon.

But iPhoto should still be there in your Applications folder.

Is the icon is crossed out? Like this?

The only iPhoto version that is running on El Capitan is iPhoto 9.6.1.

Because Apple is no longer supporting iPhoto and no longer selling it, you can only update iPhoto to 9.6.1 if you own a version of iPhoto that is associated with your AppleID at the AppStore.  If iPhoto is showing in your Purchases history at the AppStore, the fourth tab, try to update by reinstalling as described by Barney.

    See this link.

Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store.

Essentially you need to trash iPhoto, so Spotlight does not see it installed, then open the fourth tab of the AppStore "Purchased", and install again. But you cannot update at all, if you do not own an ApStore version, only a CD/DVD version of iPhoto.

Even if you cannot update iPhoto to a compatible version you can open your iPhoto Library by dragging it onto the Photos icon in the Dock.  It would be preferably to migrate to Photos, because iPhoto is no longer well supported, you cannot order prints from iPhoto any longer.

Excellent answer and advice.  Not having purchased iPhoto through the Apple Store (I think it came with my iMac when new in 2009), I'm toast.  Even the iPhoto Library is gone. It's likely I didn't even use it when I had it, just now noticed the crossed out image.  Nonetheless, thank you for responding.
