However the apple routers can have issues in some cases.. eg PPPOE may not work. But you can say the same of almost any router brand.
The airports are made specifically for apple wireless clients.. and are somewhat different in what they do.. but you should be able to use them on any computer.. again they work with most.. same as any other router brands.
I do not recommend Apple routers for people without apple devices. Apple support is now very apple centric and they have long ignored airport utility which is essential .. there is no HTML setup in apple routers.. they use a totally different system which is unique. Since apple has not released a new version of the utility since win7 it is clear they are not interested in PC market.

Just as an example I've been using Apple routers with Comcast (XFinity) for over a decade without problems but I am using the AirPort Utility software on Macs.
AirPort Utility comes preinstalled on Macs.
