Q: Time Machine Not finding Time Capsule backup disk

My MBP is usually connected to my Time Capsule via ethernet.  As long as it stays connected, my Time Machine successfully completes the scheduled backup jobs.  However, if I disconnect my MBP to use it wirelessly, once I re-connect to the Time Capsule via ethernet, my Time Machine cannot find the backup disk. Only after unplugging the Time Capsule from the power source and re-plugging it back in does my MBP Time Machine then find the backup disk and run the job accordingly.  Even at that, even though the backup job runs, the verification is never completed.  It always hangs permanently at about 69% complete.  I usually then just "skip verification".  I am not experiencing any issues with internet connectivity via the Time Capsule router.

Are there some settings or something else I should be exploring?  I'm tired of having to unplug/replug Time Capsule to get Time Machine to find the backup disk.

Thanks for any help,

David

You need to update your profile.

What OS are you running on the computer? Profile shows Snow Leopard. This seems unlikely.

What model TC is it? A1xxx from the base please.. fill in the 3 numbers.. or just tell us the tall one.

How is it setup?? It is bridged or main router?

What modem do you have, make and model?

Post a couple of screenshots from airport utility of the setup of the TC .. that will help us understand what is happening.

    Sorry for the delay-

I finally updated my profile (thanks for the heads up on that).  My Time Capsule is 6 1/2 inches high.  I believe it is Model A1470. Firmware 7.7.7.  It is in bridge mode.  I set it to bridge after encountering double NAT errors.  The modem is a Comcast Gateway (mode/router combined); CISCO model DPC3941T.

    A couple more oddities:

    - I'm able to get 2 SSIDs broadcast from my Comcast Gateway (2.4 and 5.0), in addition to broadcasting 1 wireless network from my Time Capsule (despite the router in bridge mode); although I can't successfully connect to a Guest Network from the Time Capsule, even though the network shows up on the list of wireless networks available.

    - My laptop easily finds the Time Capsule and successfully backups to it via Time Machine when my MBP is just connected via wireless.

I can't successfully connect to a Guest Network from the Time Capsule, even though the network shows up on the list of wireless networks available.

Guest wireless only works in the airports when they are set to router mode.. ie it would have worked with double NAT but will not work when the TC is correctly set to bridge. That is not a major issue as you can simply use your main modem router wireless for guests.

    - My laptop easily finds the Time Capsule and successfully backups to it via Time Machine when my MBP is just connected via wireless.

When you plug the MBP into ethernet do make sure it takes the top position in the order of clients. Or turn wireless off.

Make sure you plug the ethernet into the TC not the main modem router..

If Time Machine cannot find the TC make sure you can mount the disk in Finder.

If you still have no luck give me some screenshots of your TC setup when you are connected by ethernet.. and wireless is off. I need the details.

But here is another method of setting up the TC which I think will help .. it solves a few issues without causing double NAT.

If you need specific help to do the setup give me details of the cable modem router .. its home IP address and DHCP setup.

I had the same issue, as well as the Base Station not showing up in the AirPort Utility.

I powered down the modem and TC, and all's good again!
