Accented characters on login screen?

I'm attempting to log in to an active directory server, and the username contains an accented é.

However, when I hold down the e key on the login screen, the box does not appear allowing me to choose an accented character.

Is it possible to type this character at the login screen?

I'm on 10.11.5
