Q: Messages desktop app frequently fails to deliver messages to Android phones

When sending a SMS messages to an Android user via the "Messages" app on the desktop, I frequently get a "Not delivered" error. Sometimes if I log out of my Apple account in the "Preferences" section of the Messages app and then log back in it starts working again, but sometimes it doesn't. But eventually it fails later a few days later (I let my computer run continuously). I can communicate with the person via SMS with my iPhone consistently. So there seems to be a bug with the desktop app since my understanding is that the desktop uses the phone to send the SMS message to the Android device.

Is there anything I can try to get the Messages desktop app to work with Android 100% of the time?

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), i7, 32GB, 1TB SSD

Make sure your iPhone is also on the same network and is on.

Check iPhone > Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding > your mac listed???

My laptops and iPad are listed but not my desktop, the one I'm having a problem with. How do I add it? It's not listed at all in there.

So on my Mac, I logged out of my Apple ID account in the Preferences section of the Messages app and then logged in.

Now my Mac 5K is showing and I can send a message without getting a "Not delivered" error. However, now the MacBook Pro that was listed under "Text Message Forwarding" before is now gone. I'm only showing 3 devices instead of 4.

And I'm sure this problem will come back again as it always does. For whatever reason, the "connection" between the the Mac 5K and the phone gets lost. And as I mentioned in my original post, logging out and logging back in does not always fix the problem.

Maybe there is some kind of limit to the number of devices you can connect?

    Hi,

I am not aware of there being any limit to the Number of Devices that can have the Text Forwarding set.

However as the Mac version can Save Chats (it has done since it was iChat) it offers something that the iPhone cannot in this respect.

It begs the Question which device appears first in the Linked Devices in the Text Forwarding section on the iPhone.

Also do you need all three other devices to be linked ?

If the Mac is on all the time why both the Laptops ?

I would be tempted to turn Off Text Forwarding and the Reset the items starting with the Mac first.
