Q: How do I remotely control music on the 4th generation Apple TV

On the 3rd generation Apple TV, I could use the Remote app to pick Artist, Albums, Songs, Playlists remotely that would play directly from the Apple TV. This allowed me to sit on the deck and set or change my playlist remotely while my Apple TV played on and on. I could not rely on Airplay from my iPhone to the Apple TV due to being at the edge of my wireless connectivity. So I used the app to load up a playlist on the Apple TV which was always in range and connected to my stereo.

With the 4th Generation, I cannot find an option to remotely load a playlist, artist, album, or song. I can only manipulate what was loaded using the physical remote and a TV screen which defeats my purpose. I purchased the 4th generation because the 3rd generation could not access my Apple Music subscription while the 4th generation can.

Am I missing something or is the 4th generation Apple TV / Remote app missing something?

Make sure your Remote app is up to date. The current version is 4.2.3 and it fully supports music playback controls.

You are correct I believe, unless mine isn't working either. The previous Apple TV's could bring up your home sharing list using the 'Done' button in the top right corner. This seems to have been replaced by a 'now playing' feature on the Apple TV 4.

Using Remote app on my iPad I can access my shared music on ATV via Computer > My Music and directly from Music app > My Music (I don't use iCloud Music Library). I can also use the same Remote app on iPad to control iTunes on my Mac and listen to the stream.

    Hello Rysz,

I don't think you understand. Apparently, when using the Remote app with the earlier ATV, you could interact with information on the iPad screen. With ATV 4, all we can do is interact with the TV screen, as if using the Siri remote. The main Remote screen just simulates the Siri touchpad.

    You're correct. I misunderstood.

The detailed screen in Remote is only available while controlling iTunes.
