Q: 10.11.5 Remote Management Fails

I'm using 10.11.5 on a remote machine (mini), which I control using Apple Remote Desktop.  Since upgrading to 10.11.5 it's been failing to allow ARD connections about once a day.  Once it fails it won't allow any more connections until it's fixed.  ARD says remote management is off during failures, but if I walk up to the remote machine, it claims Remote Management is on.  The solution is to turn RM off and back on again.  Then everything works fine.  This is fine when I'm sitting at it, but the whole point of this machine is remote access.  I need to be able to connect to it reliable remotely.  Any idea as to why it's failing, or how I can recover remotely, without needing to go to the machine and manually turn RM off and on again using the check box?

Have you considered enabling Remote Login? (it's in sharing next to remote management)

with remote login enabled you should be able to SSH into the server.

    On the server:

    1. go to menu bar
    2. click on apple menu
    3. choose system prefrences
    4. click on sharing
    5. if lock shows locked, click lock, when prompted type in your admin password
    6. check Remote Login
    7. click on remote login
    8. set allow access to Only these users
    9. click +
    10. select  the admin account you want to be able to remote SSH into the computer with
    11. click select

When your having the issue with the server; you can restart ARG Agent by doing:

    1. go to dock
    2. click on finder
    3. go to menu bar
    4. click on the go menu
    5. chose utilities
    6. double click on terminal
    7. type in terminal "ssh username@serverAddress" (replace username with the username you added
    8. press enter
    9. when prompted to save, type "y"
    10. when prompted for password type in the password for that user account
    11. press enter
    12. ones logged in issue the command "sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -restart -agent"
    13. when prompted for the admin password type in the password
    14. press enter

ARD agent should be restarted, and you should now be able to connect using ARD.

If you want to try and figure out why ARD agent is stopping. You could look at the console. some times ARD Agent just seems to stop working for what ever reason. And restarting the ARD Agent is the easiest thing to do.
