Q: Contacts/Phone apps crashing

I have an issue where the Phone or Contacts apps will crash, quit, and return me to the home screen. I discovered this when trying to check how long a call was in the call log.

The behaviour seems to center around unknown numbers or new contacts.

In phone app: when looking at a list of recent calls the app crashes if I try to see more information when the caller is unknown. If I have an existing contact, it's fine, otherwise as soon as I hit that little "i" it crashes.

In the contacts app: it crashes when I hit the '+' to create a new contact.

I managed to work around this and get the call data I needed by creating a new contact for the number in iCloud on my PC - when I next checked the call log the number was now a known contact and I was able to go into the more information screen.

I have tried resetting, doing a hard reset, and checked that my iOS software is up-to-date. Does anyone know what could cause this error?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.2

I don't know but what comes to mind (possibly) is system or app corruption. If so you could try a System Restore.

First backup your device using iTunes. Also import your photos to your computer and copy all important data. Try restoring from backup first and testing it. If it does not help, you may have to restore as New and reconfigure from scratch as the backup could be corrupted. For this reason it is important to have your photos and data saved separately from the backup. Here are the steps for a Restore:

    Thanks for your answer.

A System Restore didn't help - I actually restored to an entirely different phone (original sent off to repair due to an entirely separate issue with the screen) and the issue is still present.

All my photos are backed up to the iCloud - what do you mean by having data saved separately? I'm willing to try re-setting up the phone from new and reinstalling apps etc., but how can I import or restore things like contact data/messaging history or even app data?

The safest way to backup your photos is to import them to your computer and then backup up the computer to an external hard drive.

Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Important files like spreadsheets or documents need to be copied or emailed to you. Contacts can be backed up to iCloud under Settings > iCloud > Contacts > On. However messaging history and app data is not retained if you do a Restore as New. Unfortunately if your system is corrupted a restore as new may be needed.
