Clearly it would be much more helpful if you told us exactly what you did try.
Similarly, instead of saying "updated software on computer and iPad", you should tell us version numbers. For example, if you have a Mac and it is running an old version of OS X, or a PC with an old Windows version, you cannot possibly sync your iPad because you need a current version of iTunes that cannot run on these old systems.
