Q: Time Machine Back Up creating multiple folders

I attempted to used Time Machine with my Macbook Pro and 190 GB was required tor this backup. Midway through my laptop went into sleep mode.

So to resume, I clicked "Back up now". I'm not convinced it worked because I didn't see the pop-up screen for the time duration left for completing the back up. I clicked "Back up now" again, and same thing - nothing happens.

However, it did create multiple dated folders in my external harddrive :

All the dated folders appear to contain same directories but why does it do this?

Also, I don't think the back up is complete because I remember clearly 190 GB was required but external hard drive says that only 110 GB was used.

Please advise what I am doing right or wrong. This is more complicated than I thought it would be...

Note: Using Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion OS X and WD Ultra Passport 1 TB external hard drive.
