CDs and DVDs use different components in an optical drive. It is possible the DVD part has failed.

Jun 24, 2016 10:37 AM in response to desiestby Limnos,It sounds like the drive is failing. You can buy replacement internal drives if your computer is older than 5 years and you are content working inside it, or you can purchase a large variety of external optical drives for less than $50.

Jun 26, 2016 10:31 AM in response to desiestby OGELTHORPE,You can use a DVD lens cleaning disk.
If available, shoot compressed air into the slot.
Wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) areound a bisiness card and carefully slide it into the slot.
Or you can open the MBP, extract the DVD drive and open the drive..
Ciao.

Jun 27, 2016 12:29 PM in response to desiestby Limnos,I'm always worried about shooting compressed air into the drive. I don't want to force any lint and things deeper into the drive. I'd be more inclined to do this from inside the computer where I could direct air outwards.
Be careful when using compressed air. It comes out cold and can freeze parts if too close for too long.
You can purchase special optical drive cleaning discs for about $10.
