    How connected?

Where they commercial enclosures that included the HD?

    What enclosure/HD?

Are they powered by the USB bus? Or by an AC power brick?

    - Does it show in Disk Utility?

    - Does it show in System Profiler under USB? You should see the chipset in the enclosure as well as the HD itself

    - Did you format the drives?

Connect the drives directly to your Mac, without any hubs and trying different USB cables.

Launch Disk Utility and confirm that both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled.

You know how sometimes it's the stupidest you don't check.    My surge protector has a bad plug, I moved the power cord from the hard drive to a different plug and everything works now.  Thank you all and I'm sorry but if it makes you feel any better I feel like an moron!
