iphone 6s camera

The iphone 6s is suppose to have a 12 megapixel camera. Why is the picture file size less than 3 mb? When I shoot in Camera+, I can get a file size of 13 mb. Is there a way to change the file size setting somewhere in the native camera app that I'm missing?

12 megapixels is the camera resolution, not file size. Images taken using the built in camera app are compressed with JPEG. The compressed size depends on the picture complexity and can, typically, vary from about 2 MB to 9 MB.

When you select the High quality setting in Camera+ it compresses the image less. The actual difference in image quality is very slight, if any.
