Q: IPAD pro 12.9

Greetings;

My husband is considering an IPAD PRO 12.9 Ipad and is asking for feedback on those who have already bought the machine-he is considering the 256 one.

So, if you have files backed up on an external hard drive (windows based files) would you be able to open and view any file from it?

All feedback on the ups and downs of the Pro 12.9 is welcome.

He has some files/documents stored for back up on a toshiba extenal back up drive and wants to know if he would be able to read or down load them. I could not find that section on the info on iCloud.

Thank you-plus all other advice and ups and downs are welcome as we are not computer geeks just trying to navigate computers.

We have been Windows people-so do not know that much when it comes to apple right now.

Did you click on the link in blue in my previous post?

You'll need to have Windows 7 or later to download iCloud for Windows here: Download iCloud for Windows - Apple Support

Read the link on how to setup iCloud on Windows.

Another option is go to an Apple retail store where you can buy iPad Pro and let the geniuses help you.

Without knowing the types of files your husband needs to have complete compatible access to, this is difficult to answer.

An iPad with iOS is NOT a laptop computer replacement.

Everyone thinks that cheaper iPads can be kludged into becoming a full laptop replacement.

To some level and extent, this can be done, but the hardware and scaled down software and the way iOS works limits what is possible.

If your husband was to purchase an iPad, he may need to search for and, possibly, pay for apps that will allow these windows files to be used and edited on an iPad.

If your husband is a "dye in wool" Windows user, before looking at iPads, maybe he should be looking at Windows Surface Pro 4 tablets as these run a full version of Windows and have more flexibility of turning the tablet into a more workable laptop replacement for his Windows workflow.

The right job needs the right tools.

I love my large iPad Pro with an excellent third party stylus, but I am an artistic and visual  creative/designer and use my large iPad Pro for lots of digital sketching, drawing, illustration and painting, as well as technical and creative writing.

Plus, I have been using iPads and iOS for six years and can work pretty well with iOS's limitations and the way it works which is very different from the way a normal computer OS typically operates.

    iPads aren't for everyone.

We hear from new, irate iPad users who simply don't like the way iPads and iOS works, no mice or trackpad support, limited multitasking, working with the limitations of a scaled down, compact mobile OS instead of a more "traditional" operating system (whatever THAT is!),etc..

If your husband needs full Windows file compatibility, he should be looking at Windows Surface Pro tablets first to make comparisons.

He may find the Surface Pro tablets may work out better for his needs.

    Good Luck!
