- Is it one or more optical drives?
- Are they Apple drives?
- What happens when you insert a CD or DVD?
- Do they show in System Profiler under Disk burning? You should see the chipset in the enclosure as well as the HD itself

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.
Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

Jun 26, 2016 10:27 AM in response to Randy Deckerby OGELTHORPE,Have you tried cleaning the lens. That is often a problem with slot loading drives.
The easiest solution may be to purchase an external tray loading DVD drive. They are more foolproof than the Apple slot loaders which seem to have a fairly high failure rate.
As you know, blu-ray is not natively supported by Apple.
