Q: 1st Gen Home Sharing Unable to Sign In

I have 1st Gen ATV with a problem thathas been occurring off and on over the past month. Some days I turn on ATV and everything is good. Some days I turn ATV on and it starts at the Computers/Settings screen and wants me to set up Home Sharing like it reset itself.

When I attempt to set up Home Sharing I get the "Unable to Sign In" screen. "The Apple ID you entered couldn't be found or your password was incorrect. Please try again."

On my PC, iTunes latest version installed and Home Sharing is turned on. Apple ID is the same one I'm using for ATV.

Other devices are an iPhone 6 and an iPad. Both have latest version of iTunes and are signed into Home Sharing with the same Apple ID.

Google Fiber is my ISP, ethernet cable is plugged in and working.

I've reset and restored ATV with no change.

I've opened ports 3689 and 5342.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Thanks for the information. It's quite confusing, though.

My ATV is connected to my Google Fiber network box via ethernet cable. Wouldn't this eliminate the wi-fi interference or is the concern pertain to my other devices that are connected to the network via wi-fi?

Yes it would eliminate all the issues that pertain to wifi, did you look at some of the other elements on the links provided.

It does sound like on your bad days, ATV has lost its network connection. Hence no Home Sharing. And the Apple ID validation problem is an internet access problem. You might try reconnecting both ends of the ethernet cable, or maybe even a new cable, to ensure the connection is good. When ATV is in  this state, can you enter the router setup and see if ATV is a connected device? Does power cycling ATV make it work?

I've looked at the other potential sources of interference and I'm beginning to look at the other document of miscellaneous network issues.

Could there be port forwarding issues I need to address?

I'm in the router setup right now and it's showing a wired connection at 100 Mbps.

    Hello Toddy,

Router port forwarding is used to allow computers on the LAN to accept connections from the internet. It has no effect on internal LAN traffic.

OK. The router is showing the connection, as expected. But is ATV in its problem state, or the normal working state.

How do I check problem state vs. normal working state?

Port forwarding won't affect home sharing, this is a problem associated with your local network. Is your PC wired or wifi.

Sorry. You defined the problem state as ATV Home Sharing unavailable after wakeup, combined with rejected Apple ID on attempted login. So, I suggest you wait until this recurs, then, instead of fixing it, you check for the connection in the router. Because I think it won't be connected.

I am still in a problem state. I cannot set up Home Sharing on the ATV even though Home Sharing is enabled on all other devices. User ID and password not being accepted when entered into ATV. Earlier today I couldn't watch through any apps on ATV, like Watch ESPN. Now I can.

Have you checked the ethernet cable as I suggested? These connectors build up corrosion over time, and reconnecting them may get a better connection. If the connection is marginal, it can be in this works only sometimes condition that is consistemt with the symptoms you describe. And again, when you try to use ATV and it doesn't work normally, check the network connection at the router.
