Q: 1st Gen Home Sharing Unable to Sign In

I have 1st Gen ATV with a problem thathas been occurring off and on over the past month. Some days I turn on ATV and everything is good. Some days I turn ATV on and it starts at the Computers/Settings screen and wants me to set up Home Sharing like it reset itself.

When I attempt to set up Home Sharing I get the "Unable to Sign In" screen. "The Apple ID you entered couldn't be found or your password was incorrect. Please try again."

On my PC, iTunes latest version installed and Home Sharing is turned on. Apple ID is the same one I'm using for ATV.

Other devices are an iPhone 6 and an iPad. Both have latest version of iTunes and are signed into Home Sharing with the same Apple ID.

Google Fiber is my ISP, ethernet cable is plugged in and working.

I've reset and restored ATV with no change.

I've opened ports 3689 and 5342.

Mine is black w/ the silver remote. Was given to us as a Christmas gift in either 2007 or 2008.

I'll grab other cable just to be sure. I'm currently streaming ESPN through the ATV so the device is working, just can't set up Home Sharing.

I switched out ethernet cables and ATV is streaming content from WatchESPN but still not recognizing my Apple ID and password.

OK it's not a first generation model then, it also wasn't 2007/2008.

Also are you able to use any other apps that require an Internet connection.

OK, didn't see your recent posts.

Does your iTunes content work properly over the Internet.

You can identify the ATV version from this guide Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support, so we know what you're talking about.

Regarding your login problem, have you enabled 2-factor authentication for your Apple ID?

All other internet connections are working fine. iPhone, iPad, my Android phone, this laptop, all working.  If it wasn't 2007 or 2008, what was it? My memory of dates seldom falters.  Just played some music through iTunes on this PC. Good to go.

It's 2nd Gen, based on the guide link from your post. I swear on a stack of bibles I got it before 2010, though.   I do not have 2 factor authentication enabled for my Apple ID.

Must have been at least September 2010.

If I understand you properly you are having trouble using your ID to turn on home sharing, not to log into your iTunes account, when I asked about playing iTunes content over the Internet, I meant from the computer.

what exactly happens when you try to enable home sharing, do you get an error message or does it just go back to the screen that says turn home sharing on.

Funny, most posters don't give their version, so someone has to ask. You used 1st Gen in your subject, and it's really different (includes disk drive and has a fan), so most 1st gen owners know what they have. Anyway, good to have that straight.

Regarding the login problem, are you using any VPN, unblocker, or special DNS, that might affect internet access? I have to ask this because some users have very convoluted internet setups. Are you using the DNS from your internet provider?

I cannot turn on Home Sharing on the Apple TV device. I also cannot log into the iTunes store on the Apple TV device.

I am logged into iTunes on my laptop and able to play music from our library and Home Sharing is turned on. Home Sharing is also enabled on my wife's iPhone and iPad and those devices play music from our library without issue.

The error message I receive when trying to turn on Home Sharing on the Apple TV device is...

"The Apple ID you entered couldn't be found or your password was incorrect. Please try again."

Until being corrected just now, I thought I had a 1st Gen since I remember receiving it as a gift prior to 2010.

No VPN or unblocker that I'm aware of. I'm using the DNS from Google Fiber, nothing special.

I didn't realise you couldn't sign into iTunes too, do you have all location and regional settings set correctly.

I see location in the iTunes store screen but when I select it the screen shows the Apple TV box on the left and nothing on the right. I'm assuming there's supposed to be a list on the right, similar to the Main Menu screen. I checked language and regional settings and they're good.

When I attempt to log in to the iTunes Store, the error message is "Cannot connect to iTunes store".
