Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! From what I understand, you are not able to update or install apps from the App Store on your iPad Air due to issues entering the authentication code. I can definitely understand wanting to keep your apps updated and find new ones. There are a couple of things that we can try to get this working for you.
To begin, let's have you force quit the App Store app, and then restart your iPad. After your iPad is back on, go back into the App Store and try to update one of your existing apps. Check out these articles for how to complete these steps:
Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you're still unable to update or install apps, we'll have you try signing out of the iTunes & App Store within Settings. Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store. Tap on your Apple ID at the top of the screen and then tap Sign Out. Restart your device once again. When it is back up and running, sign back in to the iTunes & App Store. From there, test whether you're able to install and update apps.
Next up would be to reset the settings on your iPad Air. This will not result in any personal data loss (e.g. pictures, apps). However, you will need to adjust certain users settings, like wallpaper and ringtones. Do also make sure you have your Wi-Fi network names and passwords available, since this process will delete those remembered networks. To perform the reset, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. After your iPad is back on, go into the App Store and test out the install/update process.
Finally, if you're still running into issues with installing and updating apps, we'll have you create a backup of your iPad, and then restore it to factory settings. Setting up the device as new will install a fresh copy of iOS, which helps us rule out software issues. Once you've confirmed that you're able to update and install apps, you can restore from your backup. The following articles go over this process in detail:
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup
Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup
Take care!
