My Macbook's Pretty Slow...How Much Does It Cost to Fix It?

I have a 13" Macbook, mid 2012. I've been having some issues with the speed. It recently malfunctioned to the point that it would literally just shut off when it was trying to start up. I've tried Hardware Tests (which do nothing because it freezes before it finishes testing), I've tried First Aid in the disk utilities, I've even COMPLETELY RESET the Macbook back to factory settings and re-installed El Capitan. Still slow, however it did solve the shut-off problem.

Are there any ways I can fix this from home? I don't have AppleCare or a warranty, so I'll have to pay out of pocket to get it professionally done, which I don't mind. But how much will it cost to fix the hardware at an Apple Store?

Hi MonaRansom,

Thanks or checking out the Apple Support Communities and for the details about the issue you're experiencing with your MacBook Pro. I can certainly understand wanting to make sure your MacBook Pro is performing at it's best. Since you've already gone through a few troubleshooting steps, I have a few more steps that you can go over to get your Mac working the way you expect.

The first thing that you can check is Activity Monitor. This will let you know if something is using more processing power or memory than normal.

Resetting your SMC and PRAM can also help if you're still experiencing slowness. The SMC is directly responsible for a number of systems that can impact your performance. Resetting the PRAM can help if you're having issues with the Mac taking a long time to start up.

If you've gone through all of these tips and are still having issues with your system performance, you can always make a Genius Bar Reservation or take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Authorized Service Provider for inspection. Since repair types vary, your Mac would need to be inspected first before any repair quotes can be made. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty, service pricing, and battery replacement.
