Trying to get older ipod shuffle to work

I recently found my ipod shuffle A1373 EMC 2400 in my car after about two years of losing it. I believe this is a fourth generation ipod, but unfortunately, I have no data cable and no manuals. Attempting to attach my earpods to attempt to play anything off it does nothing, so the battery is either empty or dead. I bought a charger which I thought would work from online and it is not recognizing the ipod at all; either the charger is not compatible or the my most current version of iTunes no longer supports this older device. Any pointers as to what I can try? I have an older windows xp desktop upstairs running iTunes 11 or earlier, in case that is the problem. I can't remember how to reset the unit at all, but was just curious to see if I could get it to do anything. Any help?
