Mac hibernates although Spotify is playing music

Hi everybody!

I came across a problem I just cannot figure out how to solve:

Although Spotify is running and playing music, my iMac hibernates after 10 minutes (just as it is set in the system menu).

It makes no sense to me at all.

I'd be happy if someone has an idea how to resolve this problem.

I'm using an iMac 27' late 2012 and running El Capitan 10.11.5

Kind regards,

Cameron

Hey Kamoranesi,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. So your Mac is hibernating but still playing music through Spotify. That is a bit strange. There maybe some settings in your system preferences that can help fix that. Your Energy Saver settings located in the system preferences has an option to wake for network access. Because Spotify uses the internet to stream your music, the Mac is not actually hibernating if this option is selected. Please check those settings and disable. You may also want to set hibernation of the Mac for longer than 10 minutes if you plan on listening to your Spotify. The link below can assist you with adjusting these settings.

Have a great day.

Hi JayB,

thanks for your reply.

It seems like I didnt describe my problem correctly:

The iMac is turned on, Spotify is playing music, after ten minutes the iMac goes into hibernation - Spotify stops playing music.

My point is, why does it hibernate anyway, while I am listening to music?

The only way is to set hibernation on lets say 1 hour.

The iMac should understand that I only want hibernation when it is idle.

Imagine you are playing a game, and it goes into hibernation while you are playing.

Is there any way to solve this?

Kind regards,

Cameron

"Hibernation" is not a Mac term, so you should not assume the same behavior as on Windows.

On Mac (you didn't specify if you have a desktop or a laptop), sleep behavior is controlled via the Energy Saver pref pane, as JayB. noted.

In my experience, when an app consumes very little CPU power, it is sometimes "disregarded" and the System goes to sleep. To prevent this, Get Info (Command+I) on the app icon, then check the box next to Prevent App Nap. Although not all apps offer this option, when they do, they will continue to work in the background.

I created a new user, and just for testing, I changed the hibernation time from 15 to 1 minute. And it worked on the test user.

So I went back to my main user, and testet again with 1 minute. The mac didnt go to sleep again.

My impression is, that because I changed the hibernation time, something changed.

Might be an explanation, might not.

Anyways, now everything is back to normal and I wanna thank everyone who helped me.
