Thank you so very much, leroydouglas. These instructions are much clearer.
However…
Some of the wording is still a bit unclear for someone like me. For Step 2, the instructions say:
2. Then, click on File > New > Disk Image From Folder.
My path wording is slightly different and says File > New Image > Image From Folder. No big deal, but it’s always nice when instructions give the exact wording I see on my screen. Maybe the wording is indeed different for some people?
Then it says:
Select the folder you want to encrypt, and click Image.
So I select the folder but no button for Image appears. So I select Open. This seems to work.
The instructions say:
To access the encrypted disk image, just double-click the .dmg file to mount it in the Finder and punch in the password whenever you try to access the folder.
Maybe I am the only one who does not know what “mount it in the Finder” means, but I didn’t know that it meant a disk image would appear on my desktop, and that is what I click in order to enter the password. I kept looking for the image in my Documents folder—finally I found it on desktop.
“…just unmount the folder from Finder.”
Does everyone else know that this means to Eject the folder? I’m glad they had a picture of the menu or I would never have figured it out.
It also would be nice if there was a final instruction that says to go back to the folder or place where the .dmg file is saved and double click to reopen.
This probably all seems breathtakingly obvious, but I’m sure there are other inexperienced people like me who would like to know how to password-protect a folder and who would like instructions that use the actual words that appear on their screen. (I can see someone getting hung up on the fact that no button for Image appears.)
Should I try to contact the person who wrote the article and let him know about my problems with the wording?
Or am I just being ridiculous?
Heartfelt thanks again for pointing me to this article!
