Video files with MOV.mov extension

A friend has taken some iPhone videos I would like to edit. He has sent them to me via iMessage and I have opened and saved them on my iMac (running Mavericks). The files look like this: IMG_1245.MOV.mov, or MOV_3320.MOV.mov. What is the double MOV extension, and can I delete one of the MOVs? I'd like to edit them (possibly in iMovie) and maybe post one to Facebook. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Both file name extensions ".MOV" and ".mov" will work for QuickTime movies on a Mac. You can leave the double extension or remove the ":MOV" part, if you prefer.

If iMovie will be able to open the files will depend on the video codec that as been used to encrypt the enclosed video in the QuickTime movie.

Just try to import the videos to iMovie and check.
