Q: Repair Boot (Bootcamp)

Dear Forum members,

in the past, Loner T helped me already once to fix this issue - however I require help again.

The original plan:

I wanted to extend my Bootcamp partition by stealing some capacity from the OS X partition.

That time i was running on Mavericks and WIN7.

This apparently destroyed my Partitiontable so I was no longer able to boot the WIN7.

Thanks again here for Loner T how advised how to fix this.

It was running stable - but I never continued the job. There was still the empty partition between OS X and WINDOWS.

Lately, I upgraded WIN7 to WIN10 - no problems afterwards.

When I now also upgraded to EL CAPITAN - the BOOTCAMP partition does no longer appear in the Boot menu (ALT Key during startup).

Also my old thread with Loner T went missing - so I need to ask for help again here. Can Loner T or anybody else help me?

I'm not an expert - as you can also read above :-)

Searching this forum I found at least that I should provide the output of some commands - which I will do in the below.

Please: HELP ME to get back into Bootcamp/Windows and also to extend the Bootcamp partition by merging the empty space into that one.

Many thanks!!!

    Hi TheCrowTL,

Based on your description, it sounds like you're no longer able to boot to your Windows partition after installing the upgrade to OS X El Capitan. I'd be glad to provide some instruction to help you out with this.

As a first step, I'd recommend using Boot Camp Assistant to safely remove Windows and the Windows partition from your Mac, restoring your startup drive to a single Mac partition. Take a look at the article below for more information:

Set up a Windows partition on your Mac - Apple Support

    Remove the partition

Use Boot Camp Assistant to safely remove Windows and the Windows partition from your Mac, restoring your startup drive to a single Mac partition. You may want to back up your information first, because removing the partition erases all of the data it contains.

    1. Open Boot Camp Assistant.
    2. Select “Remove Windows 7 or later version," then click Continue.
    3. Do one of the following:

      • If your Mac has a single internal disk, click Restore.
      •
      • If your Mac has multiple internal disks, select the Windows disk, select “Restore disk to a single OS X partition,” then click Continue.

Once you've finished this step, you can follow the instructions here to get Windows installed using Boot Camp:

How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support

    Take care!

    Dear Becky,

how can I backup and later on restore the Windows 10 properly since I need to get for example the Outlook Data restored?

So are you saying the only chance for me is to completely start from scratch?

At least last time, I was provided here with some commands which helped to get Windows booting again. I had to adjust the partition table somehow. Don't you think this will help again?

    Best regards,

    TCL

You have a Fusion drive, so your BC/Windows installation is on the HDD part of the Fusion drive.

Can you post the output of the sudo commands and use disk1, instead of disk0? Please also post the output of

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk1s5 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Can you use Re: [Help] Can't boot to windows (8.1) after resizing partition as reference and run the steps on disk1, not disk0. This should allow Windows to boot. Once Windows boots, your 178Gb partition is similar to the 79Gb partition referenced in the link. You will need a Linux Live CD or a Gparted CD to adjust GPT4 and GPT5 properly to see the additional disk space inside Windows. Before Gparted can be used the 178GB 'Ohne Title' should be converted to Free Space.

    Dear Loner T,

    I will try that asap.

I can use same commands - except disk0 (should be disk1 in my case) - correct?

Can you recommend a proper download link for an easy-to-use Live CD.

The conversion to free space: How to do this? With the Live CD? Are you saying I cant' merge? It will be shown afterwards just as an additional drive under windows - but no one big Windows partition?

    Thanks!

Yes. If you use disk0, you will get errors. You must use disk1.

My recommendation is to use http://gparted.org/livecd.php .

The conversion to free space: How to do this? With the Live CD? Are you saying I cant' merge? It will be shown afterwards just as an additional drive under windows - but no one big Windows partition?

You will convert disk1s4 to free space as

         diskutil eraseVolume free free disk1s4

Do not run this command more than once otherwise you will lose Windows because the erase renumbers the disk slices. Free  Space has no associated disk slice and hence the eraseVolume will return an error, which is expected. Once you have the Free Space, you will need to rebuild the MBR again on disk1 but use 2 3 4 (because slice 5 has been renumbered after the Free Space conversion).

Please also see http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-gparted-to-resize-your-window s-vista-partition/ as an example.

I'm also having this problem. I have a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2012. Can you help me with this backup thing? I only have 1 internal HDD

Please start a new discussion. If you are comfortable following a link which has the same issue as yours, please also see [Help] Can't boot to windows (8.1) after resizing partition .

    Dear Loner T,

thank you - Windows is booting again.

I recognized some data loss however - maybe due to a Windows bug or due to the activities we had to undertake in order to have it booting again.

In detail, Outlook PST file went missing.

Fortunately, I had a backup of that file which was almost actual.

I'm now working on the resizing partition part.

Maybe I will use your GPARTED approach or I will backup Windows and OSX Data properly and delete/restore the complete system.

In OSX, I think so far I only need to get the Pictures and itunes music somehow exported.

The Windows part shouldn't be a problem to backup.

Then I'm hoping that Apple offers some Recovery options which will allow me to delete all partitions so that i can install EL CAPITAN fresh.

Then I should be able to go for Bootcamp and install WIN10 straight on a right-sized partition which again Bootcamp process will manage.

Does that approach make sense for you?

    Best regards,

    TC

If you choose the GParted method, you may want to look at Winclone or CampTune for backup of the existing Windows. Two backups would be better than one.

If you want to completely erase your internal disk, please see OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .
