Q: HELP! IMac freeze/restart issue, Apple was no help

Hi all. I am having a persistent problem with my iMac (specs below). Brought it in to Apple Store twice now, they haven't fixed the problem. Basically: my computer will, with no discernible pattern, freeze while I'm using it and trigger a restart. Sometimes once a day, sometimes multiple times a day. Different apps open, doesn't make a difference. Apple Store/Genius Bar people told me they think it's a software issue, but the System Log confuses me and makes me doubt that conclusion: I've been meticulously noting the times of the freezes, to +/- 5 seconds, and there will be NOTHING in the System Log around that time. No kernel panic, no crash log, no notice of ANY process running. I'll post the latest example below after I list specs. Does anyone have ANY thought what could be happening? I'm running:

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)

OS X 10.11.5

4 GHz Intel Core i7

1 TB Fusion drive

32 GB third-party memory

Also always have an Apogee Duet running/connected, so the Apogee Maestro software is always running--that's the one piece of software that's always on--but no log issues related to that.

Speaking of the log, this is an example of the log around the time of my latest crash. The crash took place at 9:54:05am on 6/26. You'll notice that in the portion of the log I'm posting, from a little bit before the crash until the boot process starts again, there's NOTHING happening even close to the time of the crash. This is typical of these crashes, and there have been hundreds of them to this point. Daily occurrence minimum, usually a few times a day. System Log (All Messages) excerpt; again, crash took place at 6/26/16 9:54:05:

EXACTLY the same issue as mine, Greg, down to the rebooting while I'm away from the computer (and it's presumably asleep). And yeah, same recommendation from the Apple folks. I am in the middle of a bunch of work, tho, and right now, I can't take the day or two required to wipe HD and re-install the all-too-numerous pieces of software on my computer. Plus risk corrupting the files I'm currently working on.

Apple claimed that they ran the computer for multiple days with a clean OS X and there were no problems, so presumably it is a rogue piece of software. Do you see any items running on my EtreCheck log that are also maybe running on your computer? Or any failures that are similar? I am not a bot or shill for EtreCheck but it definitely gave me much more information (in an easier-to-parse readout) than the Console/System Log.

Perhaps if we compare our two machines and the background processes they're running, we can figure out what piece of software could be causing thing?

I will probably try that next and see what happens.

Thanks, macjack, but as you'll see in my reply to Greg above, I DO think it's software now. Would like to try to zap the offending script without having to reinstall everything from scratch.

EtreCheck doesn't show any processes that are failed for me. Some invalid signatures are similar to your log, but that's it. I'm going to try running without PowerNap enabled, as I've heard elsewhere that has been known on occasion to cause "weird things" to happen.

I've disabled PowerNap for awhile now (read the same things you did), didn't help, at least in my case. But I'm wondering about the following: The "failed"/invalid stuff matters less, I think, than the things that are actually running on the system. Do we have any overlap on any of the following, regardless of status (running/loaded/not loaded/failed, etc.)?:

No overlap there, just on the Apple processes that claim Invalid Signature. Since you tried turning off PowerNap and that didn't work, I'm going to just reinstall at this point and see what happens.

Note: Have never installed Chrome on this machine and no Google processes are running at all. Also, you have an Apogee connected but I have no external USB anything connected at all. No external anything actually.

OK, ran the script, it was very easy (thank you Linc), but it won't let me post the results here. Here is a link to the output on Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/wybw5Q0r

    Hello again Jon,

Practically speaking, EtreCheck does not "phone home" in the scary sense of the word. It does contact the server for an update to the adware and whitelist definitions and to see if there is a new version of EtreCheck available. It will also send an anonymous, unique identifier to determine if it should ask for a donation. That way, if you have already donated, it will stop pestering you about it. EtreCheck is open source, so if you want the gory details, they are available at https://github.com/etresoft/EtreCheck

I don't know if EtreCheck is going to be much further use to you. One of the valuable things it may say is that you don't have any 3rd party software that is obviously interfering. By this I mean the most common culprits like antivirus or "clean up" software. If none of that shows up, then people don't have to pester you to remove it first. Everyone then knows you have a problem that will require more effort.

You have a 3rd party kernel extension and some software I haven't seen before. It is possible that they are interfering, but not super-likely. Your kernel extension isn't loaded. If it gets loaded in response to you connecting the external device, and then your machine crashes later, then it could still be involved. Even if a kernel extension gets unloaded later, there is no protection in kernel space.

Don't about the signature failures. You manually turned on that option to show them. That is a problem, but it is a problem for Apple to fix. I suggest trying to keep a log of what software and hardware you are using and looking for patterns. Comparing notes is a good start too.

This is a complicated picture, but it's clear that you're dealing either with a hardware fault or a low-level OS bug. There have, in fact, been several kernel panics recently, as well as GPU restarts and other abnormal shutdowns with log indications of a hardware failure.

There is a discussion on this site with hundreds of reports similar to yours, all involving the kind of iMac you have:

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) Randomly Restarts Without Errors

There is no really usable information in the reports, but lately some owners have been saying that they were contacted by an Apple representative seeking more information. That could mean that Apple is becoming aware of a systematic problem with the model, but is not yet ready to acknowledge it publicly—or, it could mean nothing at all.

You've replaced the original memory modules with aftermarket parts. I suggest that you reinstall the original memory and see whether there's an improvement.

It's clear that either the Apogee device or its software driver is malfunctioning, but I don't know whether that's a cause or an effect. I realize that the device is important to your workflow, but you could try disconnecting it for a while as a test. I suggest that you also disconnect all other USB devices, including the hub. If stability improves, reconnect the devices one at a time to see whether you can identify one as the culprit.

Thanks so so so much, Linc. Really appreciate all the help. And for anyone else reading this, while EtreCheck was useful and much easier for a relatively tech-savvy but not tech-pro person to read, Linc's script was a) totally safe and b) much more comprehensive.

    Thanks again Linc!
