Q: HELP! IMac freeze/restart issue, Apple was no help

Hi all. I am having a persistent problem with my iMac (specs below). Brought it in to Apple Store twice now, they haven't fixed the problem. Basically: my computer will, with no discernible pattern, freeze while I'm using it and trigger a restart. Sometimes once a day, sometimes multiple times a day. Different apps open, doesn't make a difference. Apple Store/Genius Bar people told me they think it's a software issue, but the System Log confuses me and makes me doubt that conclusion: I've been meticulously noting the times of the freezes, to +/- 5 seconds, and there will be NOTHING in the System Log around that time. No kernel panic, no crash log, no notice of ANY process running. I'll post the latest example below after I list specs. Does anyone have ANY thought what could be happening? I'm running:

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)

OS X 10.11.5

4 GHz Intel Core i7

1 TB Fusion drive

32 GB third-party memory

Also always have an Apogee Duet running/connected, so the Apogee Maestro software is always running--that's the one piece of software that's always on--but no log issues related to that.

Speaking of the log, this is an example of the log around the time of my latest crash. The crash took place at 9:54:05am on 6/26. You'll notice that in the portion of the log I'm posting, from a little bit before the crash until the boot process starts again, there's NOTHING happening even close to the time of the crash. This is typical of these crashes, and there have been hundreds of them to this point. Daily occurrence minimum, usually a few times a day. System Log (All Messages) excerpt; again, crash took place at 6/26/16 9:54:05:

Yes, thanks Linc! Obviously Jon's logs had a lot more errors to go on. Anything in my logs jump out at you?

You also have repeated shutdowns with code -128, which is a common element in several reports about the iMac17,1.

Honestly, it was a) easier and quicker for a non-tech-expert like me to use; b) it was easier to verify as a trusted piece of software online. Its use seems quite pervasive. Not that I don't trust you or your script, it's just that I'm very busy with work right now and it was easier to run that program, and its output was parse-able even to a non-tech-pro like myself.

That's a good philosophy. Just keep that up, and you should stay free of junkware on your Mac and have smooth performance. You are also wise to be skeptical about downloads, scripts and such, and doing your research first. Too much skepticism can hamper your computing experience, but my alarm bells would go off, too, if I read a statement such as "I don't share information about what it does. No one but myself needs to know, since the output is meant to be used only by me."

    Hello again Jon,

I saw your post in that other thread because you mentioned "EtreCheck" and I periodically look for EtreCheck questions. I am not interested in the relative safety or comprehensiveness of other people's diagnostic methods. I wrote EtreCheck and I stand behind its results. If there is something EtreCheck doesn't report, it is because the information is not accessible or because I think it has no value or is inconclusive. If you are having trouble with your Mac, then maybe EtreCheck will help you or someone else fix it. That's what it's for.

I do not want EtreCheck to be used for any kind of campaign to demand repairs from Apple. Should you try to use it for that anyway, just realize that EtreCheck's author (me) will completely disavow EtreCheck's contribution to that campaign. I see no evidence of any hardware problem. I have seen plenty of evidence that Apple's flaky OS software could be responsible. There are a number of techniques such as SMC resets, PRAM resets, and clean OS reinstall that might fix it. I have seen far too many situations that spiral into long "me too" threads where all sorts of different problems are lumped into the same bucket. People decide for themselves what the problem is and then sit on their hands and demand that Apple fix it. EtreCheck is not useful in those situations.

If you feel that Linc's scripts and analysis does a better job of justifying a hardware repair, then use them and keep EtreCheck out of it. In the future, people who have definitive logic board failures may get their machines repaired with the cast-off logic boards from people in that other thread. That, combined with some future operating system update, will likely solve their problems at least.

There may very well be some systematic hardware problem. I don't know. That would be a question for Apple software and hardware engineers to decide. They built the system, only they are qualified to diagnose such failures, and there aren't any of them here.

I'm experiencing the same thing. I got a call from apple a few months ago trying to investigate the problem. They were more concerned about the safari problem but told them its somethings else. They wanted me run a command on terminal to check a diagnosis. They want to see the info but I'm not comfortable showing info to some random stanger who works from apple. I'm just too busy with work to get in contact with them again. This is the worst experience with apple I had.
