Q: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Early 2013 frequently freezing then restarting

Hi,

For some time now my Macbook has been freezing then after about 5 seconds will restart. These crashes are becoming increasingly frequent. A message appears when restarting advising a problem was encountered and the machine had to restart. Always receive a panic report (the latest of which is copied below).

First I thought this may be a problem with the graphics card as this model is subject to a warranty extension (https://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoissues/) and went to Apple genius bar to have in tested which it passed. No other hardware faults were detected. Apple had the machine for several days and did say it crashed a couple of times during testing. They said it would indicate a hardware fault with the logic board but could not guarantee this was the cause of the fault or if it was replaced would resolve the problem.

They suggested a clean install of OS which they preformed and said they did not encounter any further crashes during post install testing.

However, shortly after getting home and restoring my last backup the problem has started to reoccur.

Any advice on what could be causing the problem would be appreciated.

Panic report as follows:-

Please turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Work offline for a while, or connect an Ethernet adapter, if you have one. See whether the panics stop.

I cannot remember my macbook crashing when I've been offline (actually like most I'm rarely offline). I turned bluetooth off but as I do not have an ethernet adapter at the moment left wifi on and my macbook crashed once more.

I'll now do as you suggested and also turn off wifi for a couple of hours and see how it goes. If all OK I'll get an adaptor from work and see if problem occurs when I'm back online without a wifi connection.

Can i ask why have you suggested this action?

You may have a faulty wireless module.

    Hi Linc,

    Thanks for your help.

No crashes or panic reports created whilst off-line. I've run an EtreCheck to see if this helps (copy below).

I'll run off-line for the rest of today and then only connect via an ethernet adapter for a number of days to see what happens.

Is it just a hunch re faulty wireless module or is there something in the panic report which points to this?

    Thanks once again.

Please don't post "etrecheck" stuff in a reply to me. It's useless.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keep your confidential data secure during hardware repair.

Apple recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I've already been to Apple and they were unable to determine what the exact cause is. They suggested replacing the logic board which is quite costly but were unable to confirm that this would resolve the problem hence my reluctance.

    Thanks for your help, appreciated.

    Hello bobbieball,

If the problem returned after restoring from your backup, try not doing that. You can erase the hard drive and reinstall just the operating system. Then, use Migration Assistant and restore only user documents. If it still panics, then you will need a new logic board. Always buy AppleCare - always.

Now, there is a slim possibility that Citrix, cryptzone, and/or the Western Digital software could be causing the problem. Typically, a kernel extension is more likely to cause kernel panics, but any low-level system modification could put the system into an unexpected state and lead to a kernel panic. Since you don't really need any of those programs, I suggest uninstalling them to see if the panics stop. It may be easier to just reinstall the OS though.

Your EtreCheck doesn't report anything else that could be interfering. While it probably is a hardware problem, it won't cost you anything other than a couple of hours to reinstall the OS. Maybe avoid the game for a while too as they can be stressful on the GPU.
