How to Improve the preview quality in Photos

Recently, I started to use Photos i/o of iPhoto. After converting the iPhoto's database into Photos' database, the quality of previewing the Photos is the same as that in iPhoto.

However, when I importing new photos through SD card into Photos, I found the image quality of preview(little pictures) of newly imported photos is extremely low comparing to iPhoto. And when I click the preview photos into large size photos, it take some time to get clear photos, not like iPhotos which can get clear photos instantly.

Is there some way to improve this situation. I already started to miss iPhoto but unfortunately, there will be no update by Apple in the future.

Please kindly assist.

Are you using iCloud Photo Library?

With iCloud and "Optimize Storage" enabled, you will only seethe optimized versions, until the full sized original has been downloaded from iCloud.

Also, the generation of previews takes some time. It helps to keep Photos up and running over night to get all the background processing done after you imported new photos.

You mean the thumbnails you are seeing in the browser in Photos?

Photos may have problems to read and write the Photos Library, if it is so slow.

Is your Photos Library in the default location in the Pictures folder or on an external drive?

Have you tried to repair your Photos Library?

Important: You should back up your photo library before repairing your library.

  • If Photos is open, choose Photos > Quit Photos.
  • Press Option-Command and double-click the Photos icon in the Applications folder (or click the Photos icon in the Dock). The Repair Library window opens.
  • Click Repair to rebuild your photo library.
