Can't select iPhone icon in the top left corner of my macbook.

I am trying to resync my iPhone to remove music that is unselected in my library, but can't select the icon in the top left corner to get to the iPhone summary. The iPhone icon is still visible. Is there a way to fix this?

Should I be trying to select the icon at the very top under play/pause next to where it says music, or under devices? I'm getting a pulldown menu after selecting the icon under devices on the left side, but I can't get to a summery anywhere. A pop up gives me a few options with one being sync, but that's not removing unselected songs. This is my first time using iTunes in a while and this is my first time using a mac.

I assume you already tried re-launching iTunes and re-starting your computer. Then, try resetting your iPhone while it is connected to iTunes.

Reset: hold down the Home and Power buttons until you see the Apple logo (10-20 seconds).

If that doesn't resolve it, disconnect the iPhone and Safe Boot your Mac by holding down the Shift key while restarting it. Safe Boot is a slow process, so give it time to finish loading, then restart normally.
