Hi there,
I have had to recently recover thousands of photos from a corrupted hard drive, but they have all come in with the recovered date as the photo creation date. so there is no logical order to the photos.
I believe they still have the original date and time in the exif data.
Is there a way to bath change the current recovered / created date with the correct / exif date?

I want to regroup these photos by date, so i can work out the events, holidays, days out etc based on the date.
First I would download and open several of the files with EXIF Viewer for Mac OS X to see if the EXIF metadata has been kept intact in the files. If they have then they should be able to be read by Photos and will be organized correctly.
If the EXIF metadata fields are empty then you will have to change the dates in Photos manually with the Image ➙ Adjust Date & Time menu option.
If the EXIF info is intact and correct then Photos will use it and everything will be fine
If you are talking about file metadata that does not involve Photos in any way - photos works with Photo metadata - there are programs around you can find that will change file metadata to match EXIF metadata - I have never (and wold not) used one

If you want to deal with files the only way is with the finder and searching for software that will deal with file metadata - that does not involve Photos
If you use Photos it deals with the Photos metadata if available and will show Years/collections/moments based on the Photo metadata - you can organize into albums and folders in Photos
The "best" way is totally dependent on what you are trying to accomplish - to deal with the file then Photos is not involved - to deal with the PHotos then Photos is one good way (There are other programs that deal with Photos too like LightRoom, etc)

Thanks, it is my intention to have them all stored in Photos anyway, so it looks like getting them into photos, then creating albums is the way to go.
I am new to photos, can i ask, when they are imported into photos, can i then delete them from Finder, as they are 'copied' into photos?

Yes -- assuming you have a strongly recommended default managed library (you have NOT unchecked the Preference to copy imported items to the Photos library)
