Q: Mac Pro does not sleep

Hi

I noticed, that my Mac Pro (Late 2013) with El Capitan does not go to sleep anymore, neither automatically nor manually by using the Menu.

The Screen turns black, but it is still running. I tried the "pmset -g assertions" command in the terminal, but nothing is preventing the Mac from sleeping. Same with the Activity monitor in the Energy saver Tab. I also did a RMC and Pram Reset.

I think the last backup might be the Problem: I had a Macbook Pro, and i used the Backup from the Macbook, to restore the Mac Pro.

It's just a long shot, but i probably set the Sleep Setting to Never inside of the System Settings of the Macbook, and that setting is not available on the Mac Pro.

Is that causing the Problem? Or does anybody know another solution?

Thank you!

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11), null

See of you missed anything here:

If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake when expected - Apple Support

    • Try manually sleeping and note the time you do it. The after a minute or so open the Console app in Finder>Applications>Utilities and look for log entries associated with sleep or low-power mode. Post suspicious ones here.

My 2013 MP also will not sleep and I have not been able to fix it without a fresh install. If I then migrate users setting and app that will not sleep.  You will likely see log entries that say enter exit low-power mode, I do.

I restored it with a TimeMachine Backup.

All right, i just checked the log after the sleep command, i do not know what all these entries mean, the only weird entries are from an application that i actually deinstalled some time ago, which are not supposed to be there, the entries from "the foundry"

You should not restore a Time Machine backup to a different model, according to Apple documentation.

Please reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

I know, but i had no choice because my macbook died completely and i need the system as it is, it would take days to install and set it up from scratch. Anyway, i reinstalled the os without erasing the data, but the Problem was not solved, sleep mode is still not working

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:

    Step 1

Take all the applicable steps suggested in this support article, including the ones under the heading "If the previous steps don't work." That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem.

Note that, as stated in the article, the computer will not sleep if some sharing services are enabled. From the menu bar, select

               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Sharing

    Turn off all sharing services.

Also note that the "external devices" referred to in the article could include Bluetooth devices, other than those made by Apple. If you're using a MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro, or if you're using a desktop Mac with a wired keyboard and mouse, turn Bluetooth off to test.

    Step 2

If iTunes Music Sharing or Home Sharing is enabled, disable it or quit iTunes. Do the same with any third-party applications that have a similar feature.

    Step 3

    Select

 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off

    Step 4

    Select

               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...

    and uncheck both boxes marked

Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...

    Step 5

Open the Printers & Scanners pane in System Preferences and select each printer, then click

              Open Print Queue...

If the printer status is "Paused," click the Resume button in the queue inspector. If there are any unfinished jobs, either finish them or delete them.

If you can't clear out the print queue or get the printer out of "Paused" status, delete the queue and recreate it.

    Step 6

    Back up all data.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:

    /var/vm

    In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

A folder named "vm" should open. Inside it, there may be a file named "sleepimage". Move that file, and only that one, to the Trash, but don't empty yet. You'll be prompted for your password. Close the folder window.

Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
