Q: Locked out! Keyboard incompatible with FileVault on Macbook Pro. How to type in the password to disable FileVault?

I was logging in from my startup screen as usual when "Incorrect password" flashed across the screen.

I typed it in again which is when I realized that the keys on my keyboard were malfunctioning and inputting more than one character on pressing once.

As I was typing in a password, I couldn't see what characters it was inputting.

I pressed the on/off button to restart the system, which is the go-to fix for the layperson.

It switched on to a Password Reset screen.

I was asked why I can't type in the password on the login screen.

I was relieved to see the third option: "My keyboard isn't working when typing my password to log in."

The reason was stated as an incompatibility issue between the keyboard and FileVault.

However, I was requested to enter my password to disable FileVault on my mac, which was the suggested solution.

I am not able to do this. (Same problem as before.)

I tried connected a USB keyboard to type in the password but that didn't work.

I do not wish to reset my password. I know what it is.

I am locked out of my mac right now.

Catch-22, guys. Little help?

The main alphabetic and numeric keys on any USB keyboard should be compatible with your Mac.

Exceptions could be French AZERTY layouts, and possibly a few others. If not US-English, what keyboard do you normally use?

    Hello,

I had the exact same issue, it is related to FileVault. When you reboot into password recovery and choose the 3rd option (cannot use keyboard to log in), you actually wouldn't reset your password but un-encrypt your volume. After that you can log in normally and everything works fine - until you encrypt it the next time.

I dug around the web and found a hint that there might be a faulty "I/O board" in my MacBook Pro 13. I shared this with the repair-guy and they replaced it (I/O Board part# 661-02457). After that everything is working fine again.

    I hope this helps.

    regards

    Gerd
