Your iPad can not get a virus unless it is jail broken. Ignore that report, unless the iPad is in fact jail broken. If not, clear Chrome in the settings. Launch Chrome and go to Settings>Privacy>Clear Browsing data. Close Chrome and force restart your iPad.

Press the Home button two times quickly. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps. Swipe left to find Chrome. Swipe up on the app's preview to close it.

To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

That really applies to the MAC's not really the iPad or iPhone and to Safari and not Chrome as most of it discusses the computer version. Is there a way to block this kind of thing in the future?

Thanks

There is a section for what to do if you have an iOS device. Did you read the whole article?

Don't go to websites that are questionable. Other than that, probably not.
