Unable to Save a QuickTime File

Each week I need to import a video file from a camera and then save it for editing. To save time, I let the video import overnight. Almost every time, the next morning, the tape has run to its end, but the "Save" button under FILE is greyed out. Consequently, when I immediately re-import the file and it reaches the end, the SAVE button is active. I am running OS X 10.11.5 and QuickTime 10.4
