Q: Storage Messed Up?

Hello mac community!

I recently got a used mid-2014 macbook pro (a risk I took even though I had no clue how to work a mac..). It works flawlessly. Recently I discovered that when I look at my storage however, the storage bar doesn't match up with the calculated available storage at all.. Common sense would dictate that something is very wrong. Am I missing something or should I get it checked at the apple store?

The math is as follows:

249.78 - 197.76 = 52GB used

and yet, according to the bar, I used 104.75 + 6.75 + 5.28 + 2.5 = 119GB used???

For more information about the Other category in the Storage display, please see this support article.

There seems to be a bug in the Storage tab. Look in About this Mac > System Report > Storage. It's probably different

Omni DiskSweeper can show you the precise size and location of all your files. It will inventory your disk starting from the files that take up the most space. It can also give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper. But be careful some of the items may be important to your system.

machack, thanks for attempting to help me. However the "other" category wasn't an issue.

I came across this helpful community thread. His storage numbers didn't match up either. Apparently all I had to do was rebuild the spotlight index.

Following those steps I got the following results:

    After clearing spotlight

    After reindexing spotlight

This seems to have fixed my issue.
