Q: Replying to a message in mail causes the original message to disappear

In the last two days when I reply to some messages in Apple mail (linked to a Google mail account) it removes the original message and shows my reply in the inbox - how do I stop this? It appears that the original message is removed from everywhere on the Mac though it is still in all mail if I look on my iPad.

Am running OSX El Capitan on a Macbook Air.

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

    Hello TImG9,

Thank you for being part of the Apple Community!

If I understand correctly, while using Apple Mail, after replying to a message, the original message is longer visible and your reply is showing in the inbox.  I know how much we all rely on our email so it is important that it works the way we expect it to.

Before doing anything, the first thing I would do is backup everything that is on the computer. Nothing I am going to suggest should cause any data loss, but it is always a good idea to have a backup.  Your computer has software on it called Time Machine.  It is fantastic software for backing up your computer.  Information on how to use Time Machine is available here:

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Next, go through the steps found here:

Mail (El Capitan): If messages appear to be missing

If you get to the step of having to rebuild the mailbox, follow the link from the previous document or click here:

    Mail (El Capitan): Rebuild mailboxes

    Have a great day!

Hi thanks that seems to have helped.  Other issue that started happening at the same time is that when I reply (with history) or forward messages Apple mail just opens a blank message that I can't delete until I close mail and reopen it.  Any thoughts on this?   Best regards Tim

    Hi TimG9,

Glad to hear that things are better.  It is always good when your email works correctly.

If you have already gone thru the rebuild mailboxes procedures and are seeing the blank message, then the next step is to try to isolate what is causing the problem.  If you have not re-built the mailboxes, I would do that.  Remember to always have a current backup.

A couple of steps used to isolate what is causing the problem is starting in Safe Mode and testing in a new user account.  First, let's try Safe Mode.  Here is how to start the computer in Safe Mode:

    1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

    2. After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.

You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

    4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac again, but don’t hold down any keys during startup.

More information about Safe Mode can be located here:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

If the problem does not occur when in Safe Mode, then there is something being started during a regular start up that is causing the issue.  To solve this, try removing login item and startup items.

    How to remove login items

If you still experience the issue, then there are a couple folders to check for start up items.  They are:

    1. /Library/LaunchAgents
    2. /Library/LaunchDaemons

Open these folders in Finder and move the contents to a folder on your desktop.  If this solves the problem, you can put items back into the folder it came from one at a time until you find out which one is causing the problem.

If the problem still occurs in Safe Mode, then you will want to test in a test user.  Instructions for this procedures is located here:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If the problem does not appear in the test user account, then there is something in the original user account that is causing the problem and further probing will be needed to determine the cause.

    Have a great day!
