Q: Why isn't autosave working?

My Keynote has stopped autosaving its work. Whether I've saved the file once or not, I'm having increasingly frequent crashes and all the work is gone. I've reinstalled the software and updated it, but the problem recurs. Ideas? (One clue: I am still using Keynote 5.)

I see from the etrecheck report you have the malware "cleanmymac" installed.

Before you do another faultfinding,   you should remove this immediately as it causes system instability and poor performance.

Many users think they should be running 3rd party software that cleans, tests or adds extra security for their Mac, unfortunately most of this software is junk and is a fraud.

The sole object of this type of software is to get money from you, the software does nothing that Mac OS X already does effectivly and it does it for free.

    To uninstall clean my mac:

1 - open clean my mac 2     select the uninstaller model, select      clean my mac 2   and  clean my mac 3       then select uninstall

    uninstall modeule cleanmymac.png

2 - in spotlight type in the search box           cleanmymac

    Screen Shot 2016-06-29 at 15.06.46.png

delete each file that search has found that contains the text:    cleanmymac

in spotlight type in the search box                macpaw

delete each file that search has found that contains the text:       macpaw

You should be running Keynote '09 v5.3 with Yosemite for best compatibility. As Pages '09 v4.3 introduced autosave and revert to features, I will assume this is true with Keynote v5.3 too. Autosave in these applications will not occur without an initial Save operation to a sensibly named file on your local, or iCloud Drive.

If you originally obtained Keynote '09 from an iWork '09 DVD installation, check the version. If it is v5.3, then do nothing. If it is not v5.3 then install the Apple iWork 9.3 updater (contains Pages '09 v4.3, Numbers '09 v2.3, and Keynote '09 v5.3). Do not use this updater if your Keynote '09 was purchased through the online OS X App Store prior to Fall 2013.

You have received sound advice about removing the Mac Cleaner application. It and other so-called cleaners can be overly aggressive with their file removal, and that too may be another reason why your Keynote sessions are borking on you. Keep MalwareBytes up to date, and use it.

You are also using way more RAM than your available 8GB as you show over 1GB of swap activity which will make your Mac just crawl. That means that you need to keep fewer Google Chrome browser tabs, quit applications that you aren't using, and manage what you do run concurrently. You have a horrendous list of drivers, launch agents, and launch daemons involved and I would suggest that you review these for current need, update drivers (where applicable for Yosemite compatibility), and use vendor removal procedures for those that are no longer relevant.

Incredibly grateful to both of you for this really helpful advice. I've cleaned my machine of CleanMyMac and will prune as recommended. I realize the problem is the version of Keynote. I had a problem and had tried to reinstall it. I think I had originally purchased it from the iTunes store, but then when I removed it to reinstall it, I installed it from a work disk. I'm assuming the reinstalled disk version should be good to update?

Provided that you reinstalled from an iWork '09 DVD, and followed that with the previously linked Apple iWork 9.3 updater, then all of your iWork '09 applications will be at their last revision levels as mentioned. Again, do not install that updater over individually purchased and downloaded iWork '09 applications bought in the OS X App Store (when they were available).

This worked. Sorry for the stupid. I hadn't realized the auto-update wouldn't have updated the program.
