My finder icon in the dock now has a green hat
Have I got a virus or something? This is very odd ... don't understand it. What's going on?
Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)
You can try relaunching your Finder
>Force Quit>Finder>Relaunch
Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Neither force quit nor logging out and then back in affect this ... the finder icon still has the green hat.
From the terminal
~/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
copy and paste :
killall Dock
(and then hit the enter key to execute the command)
Just to alleviate any concern, there are no OSX viruses and if it was caused by malware or adware it would have to be the most ineffective example in the history of computing. You could try creating a new user and see if it occurs there. Most likely it is caused by a corrupt plist file or icon. Post back.
The terminal command did not resolve the issue. I created a new temporary account, and it does not have the issue. Assuming I have a corrupt plist file or icon, how can I resolve this for the account where it does occur?

Sadly, this did not resolve the issue. See my reply to the next suggestion for details.
Move to the Desktop temporarily
com.apple.dock.plist
com.apple.dock.extra.plist
com.apple.dock.db.plist
Found in your Finder>Go>Go to Folder copy and paste:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
and then again
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.extra.plist
and then again
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.db.plist
(or once you are there in Preferences select those 3 to move)
Relaunch the Finder as before, Relaunch the Dock as before. (or log out and back in again.)
If it is resolved you can delete the plist on the Desktop
