Apple TV 4 Hulu Video Quality Poor

Over the previous few months I've noticed poor picture quality when streaming Hulu content. It is particularly bad when the scene is dark (night scenes for examples). The picture not only seems to contain more artifacts, but it almost appears as if there is banding occurring. My ATV is hardwired to the network.

Here's the odd part... when I stream hulu to my Macbook Pro (over the wifi network) the picture is perfect... No 'banding...' no noticeable artifacts... I find it very odd considering that the Macbook screen is a much higher resolution than my 1080p TV.

Has anyone encountered this?

I believe my video setting is consistent with the TV (netflix/Plex/iTunes/everything else streams crystal clear). I wasn't aware I could control the resolution setting on an app-by-app basis. Where would I look to control that?

Another odd wrinkle, it seems to be tv show specific. Example: Sesame Street always looks great. The Last Man on Earth and The Last Ship both look pretty bad over my ATV but look great streamed to my Macbook (or even iPhone for that matter...).

Thanks for the reply

I just meant that there might be a setting menu within the Hulu app itself.

Hard to say regarding the different programs. They may be different types of video encoding. The ATV specs (http://www.apple.com/tv/specs/) are very specific about the supported video formats. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to identify the format of a specific stream. Obviously, the computer and iOS device may have different codecs, and they may even request different formats from the server. You might try the Hulu website, and try reporting the problem there, since it may be related to the Hulu ATV app implementation.

As a test, is it better if you AirPlay (not mirroring) from the computer or phone?

I've done all that and more many times over, I'm not your average brain dead consumer, not that you're saying that I am I'm just stating it for discussion purposes. At first I believed it was just the episode of "Containment" I was watching at the time, but it than did the samething on the next episode, which is what lead me to stop watching it on the Apple TV (gen 4) and for experimental purposes pick up where I left off the the Fire Stick, the result was the the picture looked fine, so I then tried the Roku, same thing the picture was fine, then went back to the Apple TV, and again the picture sucked, all three of these devices are hooked to the same television through a receiver (and yes I tried several different HDMI ports), I also have two other Apple TV's (gen 3) although not hooked up to this tv any longer but the problem does not exist on these which are hooked up in the bedroom and in the kitchen. The most curious thing to me is that it seems to be the same shows that look bad week to week, like "Containment" but "Wayward Pines" for instance always looks good.
