Q: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) won't start

I've the above mac and I have a weird problem. The mac would not start, I could hear the fan running and if I hold the power button I can hear it stop.  There is no visible display or light. the shift lock doesn't light.  The charger lights work normally, if I reset the SMC the charger light goes from green to orange and back to green. I contacted Apple and they could not help, we also reset the PRAM.

I left it on and then when the battery was completely flat I connected the charger and tried to turn it on, I was rewarded with the flat battery icon, progress! After a couple of minutes it booted ok, I had the Apple logo and the progress bar then boot.  Alls well then except when it went to sleep it would not startup again till I go through the battery flattening routine.  I have now restarted it, shut it down, started from cold, sleep and waken it up -all seems ok.

My question is will there be any log to show what was causing the machine not to start from sleep?  I've lost confidence and am reluctant to go to the genius bar as I don't think they will understand the problem.

Thanks for reading

All logged entries are found using Console in your Utilities folder. If this is simply a software problem then you could erase the disk and install a fresh copy of OS X. If it's a hardware problem then you need to make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If needed find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

What happens when you reset the SMC?  Did the MBP start?

Have you tried an Apple hardware Test?

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

What makes you think that?  Worst case, they, like you will be puzzled by the situation.  But then again they may be able to define the problem because they have better tools than the AHT at their disposal.  Don't sell them short.   Note that the evaluation at the genius bar will be FREE.

    Ciao.

I just tried the extended hardware test, no problems.  The genius bar is a far way and I'm in France so its difficult to explain, I do have an appointment friday though.

    thanks for the help
