Q: iPhone 5 charges with some cables and not with others

My iPhone 5 stopped charging with the original cable so I started to use others and have had mixed results. It will charge with an iPod Touch 5g cable and an Anker 6' cable. It does not charge with its original cable, an iPad Air 2 cable or Anker 1' cable. A technician has replaced the battery on my iPhone 5  and on his first visit his cable did not work and on his second visit it worked (same cable). With all cables that do not work I get the  message "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone."

    Hello there, SalinasEd!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! I know how important it is to be sure the iPhone is charging properly with the cables. Is sounds like you;ve tried some great steps using different chargers so far. Take a look at this article here about If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won‘t charge.

If your device won’t charge or charges slowly

If you have very low battery and plug into power, a black screen or a black screen with a red battery might appear for a few minutes. Follow these steps and try again after each:

    1. Check your charging cable and USB adapter for signs of damage,* like breakage or bent prongs. Don't use damaged accessories.
Lightning to USB and a USB wall adapter
    2. Use a wall power outlet and check for firm connections between your charging cable, USB wall adapter, and wall outlet, or try a different outlet.
    3. Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device, then firmly plug your charging cable into your device. If the charging port is damaged, your device probably needs service.
The lightning port on the iPhone 6s
    4. Let your device charge for a half hour (If your device is unresponsive afterward, learn what to do).
    5. Force restart your device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo. Then let your device charge for another half hour.
    6. If your device still won’t power on or charge, take your device, charging cable, and charging adapter to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for evaluation. You can also contact Apple Support.

*If you're unsure about whether an accessory is damaged, take it to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for evaluation, or contact Apple Support.

If an alert says that your accessory isn't supported or certified

These alerts can appear for a few reasons: Your iOS device might have a dirty or damaged charging port, your charging accessory is defective, damaged, or non Apple-certified, or your USB charger isn't designed to charge devices.

    1. Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device.
    2. Restart your iOS device.
    3. Try a different USB cable or charger.
    4. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.
    5. Contact Apple Support to set up service.

If you aren't able to resolve the issue with these steps, it might be best to contact Apple directly by going to Contact Apple Support to find the best way to resolve the issue.

    Cheers!
