    Hello pitfromathens,

From my understanding of your post, it sounds like you wish to disable the guest user on your iMac. I can appreciate wanting to have settings saved the way you'd like!

If you enable Find My Mac in the System Preferences > iCloud menu, the guest user will be automatically enabled. Learn more here:

OS X El Capitan: Guest user preferences

Guest login can work with the Find My Mac feature of iCloud to help you find your Mac if you lose it. You can locate your Mac if someone finds it, logs in as a guest, then uses Safari to access the Internet. (Find My Mac must be turned on before you lose your Mac.) For more information, see Use Find My Mac.

If the guest user continues to be enabled, this is the likely culprit. Take care!

    pitfromathens,

Thank you for the update and screenshot!

A common cause of this symptom would be if you've ever enabled the "root" user on your iMac. The "root" user is not enabled by default and is not needed for normal operation, so you are safe to disable it. Use this article for the steps:

Enabling and using the "root" user in OS X

How to disable the root user

    OS X Lion and later

    1. From the Apple menu choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
    3. Click on the lock and authenticate with an administrator account.
    4. Click Login Options.
    5. Click the Edit button or Join button.
    6. Click the Open Directory Utility button.
    7. Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
    8. Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
    9. Choose Disable Root User from the Edit menu.

Another common cause of this icon appearing would be if you use network logins with your iMac. This would be typical of a networked computer, such as a school or work computer. If your iMac is part of a network, be sure to contact the network administrator for further details.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    pitfromathens,

Great job in narrowing down the common causes of this behavior! As this continues to appear after attempting the above solutions, I'd like to suggest exploring other options with Apple Support. Here is a resource to start: https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action

    Take care!

Not exactly what you want, but try going to System Preferences/Users & Groups/Login Options and set to Name and Password.

I was just thinking the same thing as appreciate.

I don't know why, but you may have a hidden user account. Copy the following this command and paste into Terminal, then hit return. Look for any user listed other than, daemon, root, nobody, Guest, and your own.

    dscl . list /Users | grep -v "_"

Is this Mac 'joined' to a network server?

In the Users & groups > Login options should list any network servers that are configured on the Mac, the 'other' user can be created because of that feature.

Also see the third answer at…

    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/165041/what-is-other-account-on-os-x-yo semite-login-screen

As explained there the following command in Terminal may help…

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWOTHERUSERS_MANAGED -bool FALSE

You will need to do that when logged in as an admin user via /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.

EDIT: Looks like you have an extra user called 'unpeelable'. Follow the other advice to reveal that.

It shows that you have two user accounts, but only one shows on your screenshot, but I can't read it to determine which is hidden--I'm guessing unpeelable because the username doesn't look that long in the screenshot.

    Did you ever create "unpeelable?"

You can read the info in the record with:

    dscl . read /Users/unpeelable
