Time Machine - Not enough space (but plenty of space)

More Apple more problems.

So time machine hasn't been letting me back up lately and I have no clue what to do at this point other than ditch apples horrific back up system.

My iMac has a 3TB internal and Im using a 3TB external for backing up only. The iMac has 1.3TB being used. The 3TB back up drive has corresponding space.

Time machine has been working for awhile but the last month is keeps saying not enough space. There are no other drives connected to the time machine back up option and my iMac and back up drive have plenty of space.

I also went as far as clearing off the back up drive and starting from scratch. It made one back up and then prompted me again with not enough space.

Also I have never noticed time machine delete any old back ups to make room.

Thanks

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

time machine does not take a carbon copy of your harddisk it save the sate where you have file x and if you delete file x it saves where it's gone if you download file x once more it save where it's back

and you can restore each state

so over time it will use an infinite amount of storage, why it does not delete the old ones I do not know

but I too have had to manually clear my external timemachine hd and start again
