Q: Frequent kernel panics

Hi guys,

I've been suffering from frequent kernel panics.

Generally it happens after the computer has gone to sleep, so that might have something to do with it?

It's only a month old, so I'm not sure why this is happening already..!

Any thoughts?

    This is a warranty issue.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keep your confidential data secure during hardware repair.

Apple recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

    EDIT:

Disclaimer: Linc Davis excellent advice was not present when I started composing. My advice is not intended to contradict or diminish anything he wrote.

That is a page fault (a reference to memory that the process does not own) and the drivers at the scene of the crime are graphics drivers.

If you have several such reports, check each of them.

    • If the kernel panic reason is the same, and the drivers at the scene of the crime are the same, you may have a damaged Installation of MacOS, and a re-Install in place may be needed. This does not bulk-erase ANYTHING, but merely writes a new copy of each of the more than 350,000 files that make up MacOS.

    • If the kernel panic reason and drivers at the scene of the crime is different, you may have a RAM memory problem. MacOS slightly randomizes the load address each time you start it up, as a hedge against attacks on a fixed address in RAM. The cause of the panics will change even if the same RAM address is failing each time.

    >>> Consider this a WakeUp call for a disaster waiting to happen. If you do not already have a Trusted Backup, you should purchase a large (3x or more times the size of what needs to be Backed up) external drive. Its external enclosure can be any kind, even a cheap USB-2 enclosure will work fine. Turn on Time machine and in under a half day, you will have a Backup of everything.

If you are within the 90 day free window in the US, telephone support is included, free. Call them.
