Mac OS crash when thunderbolt ethernet is UNPLUGGED

I'm experiencing a very strange issue.

When i unplug thunderbolt ethernet, in 1-2 minutes my Macbook Pro Retina 15 (Mid 2015) hangs with a black screen (keyboard light is on) for 15-30 seconds and than shuts down.

It happens even if the ethernet cable is unplugged (so i'm actually using wifi).

System needs the adapter to be plugged in.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Hello vpol,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. I know how important having your Macbook Pro keep working when using Thunderbolt accessories is to you!

If I understand correctly, when you unplug a Thunderbolt cable from the Thunderbolt port on your Macbook Pro, your Mac will go to a black screen after a minute and then shut down. To help narrow down and resolve this issue, please follow these steps:

1. First, let’s make a backup of your personal data before we do anything:

Backing up your Mac hard drive

2. Next step would be to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) as this controls hardware on your Mac like the Thunderbolt port.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

3. Use Safe Mode to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, delete system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

Cheers!

Thanks for that reply and additional info, it really helps! Since the issue did not occur in Safe Mode but came back after restarting normally, the next step would be to test in a new user to narrow down if this is an user specific issue or system wide:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If this issue doesn’t occur in the new user, then this is limited to your user account. You may want to manually migrate your personal data to a new user and test again.

OS X El Capitan: Share files with others who use your Mac

If this issue happens in the new user as well, this is probably system wide, and you would want to reinstall OS X in Recovery Mode and test again.

OS X: About OS X Recovery

Cheers and have a great day!

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Great, that info really helps to narrow down your issue. It sounds like you may have a hardware issue that needs further investigation. You have a couple of options:

1. You can start with running the built in Apple Diagnostics test. This can provide additional info and reference codes to help address this further.

Using Apple Diagnostics

2. You can have an Apple repair tech inspect your Macbook Pro as they have more tools and can test for your specific situation. Please click this link for more info:
