Thanks for your response. I have tried rebuilding the index (both using the method mentioned in the link and using the Terminal command but files from the excluded folder still show up.

Also check the box that out side the window : allow spotlight suggestions in spotlight & look up .
open safari > safari preferences > search > smart search field > check the box : include safari suggestions .screen shots are there to guide .
