I guess I dodged a bullet. But in trying different things beforehand, (applying the logic that an item couldn't be deleted or changed because it was in use and  'locked'), I created another user and made him admin also. I then switched to the new user but still could not rename the switched-from user file. A side note: if you populated the Dock with some other items while in the original user file, then switched to another user that you just created, then you would notice that everything on the newly created desktop is different (default). I don't know if Apple has this, but windows has a program that allows you to copy all user information to a new user keeping you from having to replicate everything (links, etc.). However, having said all that, everything is now in good and working order.
